Breed Description

Built to run at high speed over rocky hills, thick woods, and swamplands, the Redbone Coonhound is streamlined but strong. A bit taller at the withers than the hips, this breed has slightly arched loin. This breed has a medium to large size, with males standing 22-27 inches tall, while females stand 21-25 inches in height. They typically weigh around 45-70 pounds.

Coat

The Redbone Coonhound has short, shiny and smooth to touch coat. Their coat is rough enough to protect their skin during hunting. This breed has a remarkable rich red color.

Activity

The Redbone Coonhounds require a lot of daily exercise. They love being taken on nice long walks, or running alongside a bicycle or with their owners when jogging. With great stamina and endurance, these natural hunters have great scenting nose. They are known to take off if an interesting scent is picked up. Although calm indoors, this breed are not ideal for apartment dwelling. They should at least have an access to a large backyard.

Temperament

The energetic, even-tempered Redbone Coonhound is natural hunters. They are always eager to please their owners, keeping their happy, loyal, and alert disposition at all times. This breed is great with children. But their hunting instinct, however, may not go well with other household pets, such as rabbits or cats. These coonhounds make great watchdogs, and willingly alert their owners if strangers are approaching. Obedience training and socialization is very important for these hunters. They are highly adaptable to all their possible roles, whether it is a hunting dog, or an indoor companion.

Overview

The Redbone Coonhound has been widely used as hunters for raccoon, cougar, and bear. The agility of this breed allows them to hunt, and can at times be used as water dogs.

Care

The Redbone Coonhound is relatively easy to care for. They will only require occasional brushing. With a lifespan of 12-14 years, these dogs are generally healthy. But like most other breed of dogs, they are prone to obesity and hip dysplasia. So, balanced nutrition and proper exercise are always important.

Training

The Redbone Coonhound is known to mature slowly both mentally and physically. Although it may take time to train these dogs, their willingness to please will make it less challenging as it seems. This breed has a natural treeing, with a keen hunting instinct. It is advisable for this breed to be socialized well at a very early age, and be taught basic obedience.

Character

As with a lot of hunting dogs, these Redbone Coonhounds have independent intelligence particularly appropriate for problem solving. But, this can become an issue if their problem is in the household, or around the backyard. They will want to solve it any other way. But, these dogs are generally unflappable and highly adaptable, willing to take on anything that comes.
